Purple was the hardest colour I've ever worked with

The purple Printable Fairies Collection laid out

Purple has been difficult.

It isn't just a colour; it's a threshold. It holds both the blue and the pink, the cold and the warm, and looking at it means admitting that two opposing truths can live in the same space. I avoided it for months. It was my first time working with it properly, and I was genuinely afraid of getting the tones wrong.

I think I chose right. You'll tell me if I didn't.

It started with a house

Long before there was a colourway there was a drawing of a house, and I redrew it about six times because the windows were wrong.

The fairy house is the piece I'm proudest of in this kit, because it isn't decor. It's an invitation. A child who is handed a printed house front will do something with it that you did not plan, and that is the entire argument for printable play. You are not buying a finished object. You are buying the start of an afternoon.

I always start with the buntings

Every kit begins there for me. A bunting sets the palette and tells me whether the whole thing is going to work. String it across a shelf or anchor it between two walls and you have changed a room in about four minutes, which is roughly the attention span available to most of us.

A note on open-ended play

Open-ended play can be a happy accident, or it can be nudged along with a theme beautiful enough that a child wants to enter it. Maybe that isn't strictly open-ended anymore. But it does invite connection, and connection is what I am actually selling.

Note from Marie: If you have been putting off a colour, a project or a whole shop because you are scared of getting it wrong — this is your sign. Purple didn't kill me.
