I set it up while she was napping.
Tiny heart glasses on the bunny. The pig got a blue bandana. A little “mum” flag tucked into the tiny teapot with a flower in it; blooms already arranged in the mason jar; play food laid out on a quilted picnic blanket my mom made by hand. I stepped back and thought; yeah, she’s going to lose her mind.
She walked over slowly, taking it all in. Then she got to work.
Every single stuffed animal needed a full cup. She went around the whole table; bear, bunny, pig; adjusting cups, moving the plate, making sure nobody was left out. Three years old and already the most attentive hostess I’ve ever seen.
Then she looked up at me and invited me to sit down.
I sat on the floor next to a pig in a bandana and a bunny in paper heart glasses, and I had the best cup of imaginary tea I’ve ever had.
The printables from Marie’s Mother’s Day kit cut down beautifully at quarter size for the tiny guests; the heart glasses, the tags, the little flags. I also printed a full-size set, and we carefully cut and assembled different elements into cards to pass out to all the wonderful women and mamas in our life.
This season has a way of making you slow down and really feel it; and somehow a three-year-old with a teapot and a table full of stuffed animals managed to do exactly that for me.
